surgical Procedures > Hands Rejuvenation

Hand rejuvenation is a procedure that is undertaken by people who feel uncomfortable with the look, and feel of their hands. The effects of old age: such as sun exposure, a bony appearance, wrinkles and spots are often factors that can make an individual uncomfortable with the appearance of the hands. Hand Rejuvenation can make a patient feel more comfortable with their hands through restoring a youthful and fresh appearance.

A hand rejuvenation procedure can be done in a number of ways. The choice of procedure can depend on factors such as the preferences of the consultant and the degree of correction necessary A chemical peel is one procedure that your consultant may choose to undertake, this involves applying the chemical to your skin, resulting in a new layer of skin reaching the surface.

Another procedure is known as Sclerotherapy. This treatment alters the colour of veins to make them naturally blend in with the colour of the patient's skin. A surgeon may also choose to perform work with a scalpel to reshape, and tighten skin to the patient's requirements.

Preparation

Before undergoing hand rejuvenation consideration and preparation are vital elements. Those who are considering the procedure should clearly outline their targets, and openly discuss this with their consultant. Those who are considering the procedure should be aware of the risks and complications that can arise, as well as the practical changes that are needed prior to surgery. Patients are required to stop taking medication which alters blood viscosity; including aspirin. In preparation of surgery it is also highly recommended that patients avoid smoking, to provide a quicker recovery.

After The Operation

Following hand rejuvenation surgery, patients should not return to work for a period of 10- 14 days after the surgery. Patients should also choose to wait around six weeks, before returning to regular, exhaustive exercise. Patients will naturally have to wait until their skin has recovered before the complete any heavy lifting, or apply excess pressure to the hands.
